Amarone della Valpolicella is one of Italy's great red wines, made in Veneto from grapes partially dried before pressing to concentrate them — and its casks give this Arran its most striking feature: a genuine pinkish-copper hue that's earned the whisky the nickname "the pink whisky." The distillery's unpeated Lochranza spirit matures around eight years in traditional oak before finishing up to 12 months in Amarone casks sourced from an artisan northern Italian producer, bottled at 50% ABV, non-chill filtered with no added color. Expect dark grape skin, cherry, fig, pomegranate, ripe orange peel, and dark chocolate on the nose, layered over the tropical fruit familiar from Arran's 10 Year, with rose petal, nutmeg, pepper, and ginger underneath. The palate turns rich and syrupy — honey, nectarine, poached pear, red plum, cranberry, marzipan, toffee, and a hint of espresso — finishing long on dark berry compote and dry oak. Whiskybase's community rates it 83.77 across 713 ratings. Reviewers consistently praise how well the wine and spirit marry on the nose; the honest split is on the palate, where some find the wine influence a touch dominant. Rich, indulgent, and unmistakably distinctive.
