Frigate Reserve started with the 21 and worked backward. A group of investors from Abaco and Walker's Cay in the Bahamas went to Panama, got access to the reserve casks of Don Pancho Fernández — the Cuban-born master blender behind Zafra, Don Pancho Orígenes, and a prolific run of private-label rums — and, after months of trials, landed on a 21-year blend they considered their definitive rum. The 8 Year is that recipe dialed down: the same components at younger ages, column-distilled from Panamanian molasses, aged eight years in oak, and bottled at 40% ABV in a long-necked onion bottle modeled on a 1600s rum bottle that washed ashore on Abaco. The Barrel Tap positions it for drinkers who lean toward bourbon and whiskey rather than sweet rums: vanilla, caramel, tropical fruit, and oak spice, then toffee, dark chocolate, toasted nuts, and baking spice, finishing long and mellow. Got Rum? found the bottle a standout on the shelf and traced the blending story. Honest note: Rum Ratings' drinkers are candid — the 8 is sippable but neither repulsive nor memorable, and the 15 is the best buy in the line — and one taster noticed bottle-to-bottle color variation. A dollar per bottle went to Abaco's Hurricane Dorian recovery. For a Panamanian rum and Coke, an Old Fashioned, or a first step into the Frigate line before the 15.
