Czech single malt sounds like a novelty until you learn who's behind it: Rudolf Jelínek, the Moravian distillery officially founded in the late 19th century with roots stretching to the 16th, best known worldwide for its plum brandy — and the Gold Cock whisky brand itself has been around since the 1970s. This Peated expression is the boldest thing they make: malt from the Bruntál malthouse smoked to roughly 30 PPM (genuine Islay-level peating), fermented with distillery yeast, double-distilled as slowly as possible, then matured in heavily charred European winter oak casks coopered in the Czech Republic — local barley, local wood, local craft, the whole way through. Whiskybase's community rates it a solid 83.4/100 across nearly 100 ratings, with reviewers describing something genuinely unlike Scottish peat: coniferous forest, pine resin, and smoldering pine needles layered with herbs, opening into ripe apricots, figs, and bitter orange marmalade, with a dry, smoky, fruity palate. Dramface, reviewing the brand's older stock, praised the operation's honest craft credentials — floor maltings, local cooperage, no chill filtration or added color. A genuinely distinctive, well-made curiosity for peat lovers who think they've tasted everything. Check your bottle's label for exact ABV, as bottlings have ranged from 45% to 49.2%.
