Chase Smoked is the world-champion English potato vodka, put through smoke. William Chase — the Herefordshire farmer who turned his potatoes into Tyrrells crisps in 2002 and into vodka in 2008 — built his single-estate distillery on King Edward and Lady Claire potatoes grown on the family farm, distilled four times in a copper batch pot and twice more in what was Europe's tallest rectification column; the original took Best Vodka in the World at the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. For this expression, that potato vodka is infused with the smoke of English oak, and bottled at 40% ABV. Drinks Enthusiast, tasting an early small batch of just 1,000 bottles, found light smoke on the nose that bursts out on the palate against the creamy potato texture, with a long, dry finish. Expect a nose of gentle woodsmoke — bonfire and toasted oak rather than peat or bacon — opening into a palate where the potato's rich, creamy body carries the smoke, a savory, faintly sweet character underneath, finishing long and dry with lingering embers. Honest note: this is a savory, smoky vodka built for cocktails, not a sipper, and it's the Chase for whisky drinkers. It makes a Smoked Bloody Mary, a Smoky Martini with an olive, an oak-smoked vodka Old Fashioned, a Mule with a smoked-salt rim, or a dash in anything that wants campfire. Diageo bought Chase in 2021 and closed the Herefordshire site in 2025; farm-era bottles are the ones to keep.
